Travel Expert Offers Tips for Safe Spring Break Getaways
As the winter chill lingers for some, the idea of a warm spring break getaway is becoming more appealing. While booking a vacation can be as easy as clicking a button, ensuring a safe and smooth trip—especially for international travel—requires a bit more thought and preparation.
Mandy Litterini, owner of Litterini Travel Agency, is a seasoned travel expert with over a decade of experience in the industry. She knows that spring break season demands careful planning.
"I’ve accumulated over 60 passport stamps in the last three years alone," Litterini shared. "From Grenada and Turks and Caicos to the Dominican Republic, I’ve been there."
However, with recent news of a University of Pittsburgh student missing in the Dominican Republic, safety has become a top concern for many travelers, prompting questions on how to stay as secure as possible while vacationing abroad.
Litterini, who frequently travels alone, believes in the importance of confidence and preparation.
"People often ask me if I’m afraid to travel alone," she said. "Honestly, I’m not. Sometimes, walking around downtown Pittsburgh feels more dangerous than staying at a resort in the Caribbean. Resorts have high security, and there are always plenty of tourists around, which makes them safer."
Even with heightened concerns, Litterini offers advice on staying safe, even at resorts, especially during spring break.
"It all comes down to common sense," she advises. "Don’t leave your resort late at night, always stay with a buddy, and keep track of how much alcohol you're consuming. Drinking too much can make you less aware of your surroundings."
Travelers should also pay attention to safety recommendations when choosing their destinations. Currently, the Dominican Republic is under a U.S. travel advisory of "increased caution."
"Many people forget about the travel advisories until something happens," Litterini said. "That's why I always remind my clients that the U.S. maintains heightened security levels for many countries, so it’s important to stay informed."
Despite the caution, Litterini maintains a reassuring stance. She wouldn’t hesitate to travel to the Caribbean alone, even with her children, emphasizing her belief in the safety of the destinations she recommends.
"My livelihood depends on travel, so I would never suggest going anywhere I didn’t feel was safe," Litterini added.
When in doubt, she encourages travelers to consult with a travel agent before embarking on an international trip. Whether it's for safety tips or travel advice, expert guidance can provide peace of mind during any vacation.
As spring break approaches, taking simple precautions and staying informed can ensure a safe and enjoyable escape to warmer destinations.
