New Direct Flight Route Connects Erbil and Athens: A Milestone for Kurdistan Region's Global Connectivity

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of a new direct flight route between Erbil International Airport in Iraqi Kurdistan and Athens International Airport in Greece, marking a significant step forward in connecting the Kurdistan Region with Europe.

The inaugural flight from Athens landed at 4:00 a.m. local time in Erbil on Sunday, carrying 97 passengers to the Kurdish capital. Shortly after, the return flight took off for Athens, with 98 passengers onboard. This new service will operate twice a week, with plans to increase the frequency in the near future. According to Ahmed Hoshyar, General Director of Erbil International Airport, efforts are underway to expand flight options to further boost accessibility.

This new route brings the total number of countries directly linked to Iraqi Kurdistan by air to 21, strengthening the region’s position on the international map. The new connection is expected to positively impact tourism, trade, and diplomatic relations between Kurdistan and Greece, making Athens a key European gateway for travelers and businesses alike.
