Iraq Launches E-Visa System for 37 Nations: What You Need to Know

March 14, 2025 – In a move aimed at streamlining travel to Iraq, the government has officially launched a new electronic visa (e-visa) system, replacing the previously required visa-on-arrival for citizens from the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and a range of other countries. This new system, which took effect on March 1, 2025, promises to reduce waiting times at immigration checkpoints and simplify the entry process for travelers.

The countries impacted by this update include the United States, European Union member states, Australia, Canada, China, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, South Korea, Russia, and the United Kingdom. Under the new rules, citizens of these countries no longer need to obtain a visa upon arrival in Iraq. Instead, they must apply for an e-visa before their trip.

The e-visa, which is valid for 60 days from the date of arrival, can be used for entry via Iraq's land, air, or sea borders, making the process much more convenient. This new system eliminates the need for travelers to visit an Iraqi embassy or consulate to submit their visa applications, greatly enhancing ease of travel.

Travel Advisory for Iraqi-born Foreign Passport Holders:

As part of ongoing efforts to stay updated on the travel situation, Luxuria Elite has reached out to the Kurdistan Regional Government's representation in Washington, D.C., to confirm the status of an exemption letter issued by the Kurdish government in May 2024. This exemption previously allowed children of Iraqi citizens born outside Iraq, who hold foreign passports, to enter the country as long as they were traveling with at least one Iraqi parent.

While we have not yet received a response from the representation, we are eagerly awaiting confirmation on whether this exemption still applies under the new e-visa system. Rest assured, we will provide updates as soon as we have more information regarding this matter.

In the meantime, travelers are advised to apply for the e-visa before their trip and, for additional peace of mind, secure health insurance before traveling to Iraq. Stay tuned to Luxuria Elite’s blog for further updates on this evolving topic.

Safe travels, and we look forward to assisting you with your next adventure!
