Could “Standing Seats” Soon Become a Reality on Short-Haul Flights?

In a bid to maximize cabin capacity and reduce ticket prices, some budget airlines are reportedly exploring a bold new seating concept—standing-only airplane seats—which could take off as early as 2026.

Designed by Italian manufacturer Aviointeriors, the innovative Skyrider 2.0 seats have now passed key safety certifications, reigniting discussion about their potential rollout on short-haul routes across Europe and beyond.

🚶 What Are Standing-Only Seats?

The design is more “leaning” than fully standing. Resembling a rollercoaster harness, these padded upright supports allow passengers to rest while maintaining an upright position. This reduced seating footprint enables airlines to increase passenger capacity by up to 20%, particularly on flights lasting under two hours.

First unveiled in 2018, the Skyrider seats aim to redefine ultra-low-cost air travel by packing in more travelers without expanding the aircraft’s footprint.

“Skyrider 2.0 opens the traveling experience to a wider passenger market,” Aviointeriors explained. “It allows ultra-high cabin density while preserving essential comfort standards.”

✈️ Which Airlines Might Introduce Them?

While no airline has officially confirmed adoption, Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary has long supported the concept. He once suggested standing ticket prices could dip as low as £1, sparking both intrigue and controversy.

That said, the idea has been met with skepticism—particularly from travelers who prioritize comfort, legroom, and the traditional seated experience.
